ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH

Swallowing Mountains – Exhibition by Karen Tam, Artist-in-Residence

| Picture by McCord Steward Museum Montreal

This season offers a beautiful moment to pause and recognize the rich tapestry of contributions made by people of Asian origin—contributions that have shaped every corner of our society, from science and technology to the vibrant worlds of sport, art, and, of course, the culinary traditions we hold so dear.

In honour of this celebration, we sat down for an inspiring conversation with two remarkable individuals of Asian heritage: the Co-founder of Chezanny company and a dedicated Chinese language teacher.

Through their personal stories, we explored how food has played a transformative role in shaping identity, bridging generations, and preserving cultural legacy. They spoke candidly about what it means to grow up between cultures—rooted in the past yet reaching toward the future—and how cooking remains a powerful act of pride, resilience, and belonging.

At Chezanny, we've always believed that the kitchen is more than a place to prepare meals—it's a space where stories are passed down, cultures come alive, and hearts connect. As Jie Yuan beautifully puts it, cooking is "the bridge that brings together people from different cultures, enabling bonding and preserving heritage."

This month, we invite you to join us in honouring Asian heritage—not just through ingredients and recipes but also through the stories they carry and the connections they spark around the table.

A memoir of Family and Belonging

Asian Heritage Month reminds us that global cuisine's richness is inseparable from migration's journeys. While migration is a universal phenomenon, the quest for belonging is deeply personal. Just think: Would winter in the Northern Hemisphere feel complete without a steaming bowl of ramen, pho, or dumpling soup? These dishes are more than comfort—they're cultural anchors.

This month’s recommended read, Restaurant Kid by Rachel Phan, presents a tender, thought-provoking exploration of what it means to grow up in the country of your birth while feeling like a guest at your own table. Phan recounts challenging childhood moments—bringing traditional Chinese meals to school—and the internal tug-of-war between pride and assimilation. Through her story, we’re invited to reflect on how food shapes identity, and to ask ourselves: Can we cook our way back to who we are—or who we want to become?
